CityWrights

From the site: “The first CityWrights Conference in 2011 was an intimate experiment to gather playwrights from our South Florida backyard and around the country for a weekend of creative and professional “work and play”. City Theatre’s goal was to meet playwrights and have playwrights meet us and see the kind of work we do in our signature programming, the annual Summer Shorts Festival. Another was to bring to Miami the theatre artists, experts and industry leaders who are impacting how playwrights create work and manage business today, to inspire, educate and engage us. Finally, we wanted to make a forum for dramatists that would be creative, productive and fun, and add to the growing cultural dynamic of South Florida.

“The CityWrights Weekend is informative, substantive and surprising, and, like a good play, stuff happens: strangers become colleagues, networking makes new relationships, old friends catch up and fresh connections are made; information leads to action, prompts lead to pages, readings become productions, plays are considered for publication, business questions find answers, ideas result into projects and collaborations.

“CityWrights is about communicating, connecting, and creating, and this year’s programming is about taking up the tools of the trade and grabbing the keys to the kingdom. Please enjoy the conference and take something useful away with you, be it The Ten Minute Marketplace, a Wrighter’s Block or the New Play Exchange, an informal break out with one of the professionals, a book purchase from the publishers and editors, a short in Summer Shorts, a tip from a director, a writing exercise that results in a breakthrough or a new idea, contact with artistic directors and producers, a word of advice, a drink with new pals at the Epic pool bar, a link to a new site, a tap of a keyboard, a tweet, a blog post, a note voiced into a device.”

Symposium Series: Feature Length Screenwriting

This installation of Symposium Series presents Producer and Screenwriter Rolando Vinas leading a five-part symposium on the art and craft of feature length screenwriting; topics ranging from the intricacies of formatting to narrative and character development. Symposium screenwriters will workshop their own personal feature length pieces, developing and discussing their works throughout the five-part series of workshops making up the symposium.

“Symposium Series: Feature Length Screenwriting” will also feature two free open forum lectures co-presented by MFDP and Cannonball discussing the evolving nature of contemporary experimental art films.

Only a limited number of slots will be made available for each workshop in order to facilitate thoughtful, in depth conversations about each screenwriter’s individual work.

The Brainery Workshop

The Brainery Workshop is an online creative writing class focused exclusively on speculative fiction as an artistic discipline worthy of theory and practice. The writing participants are expected to produce includes, but is in no way limited to: magical realism, science fiction, horror, weird tales, slipstream, steampunk, and the like. As long as there’s a speculative fiction-y element, we’ll call it good.

The courses are an intense practicum in speculative fiction writing and students can expect a traditional graduate-level fiction workshop, concentrating on understanding and implementing the various aspects of speculative fiction. These aspects include craft issues such as characterization, point of view, narrative structure, style, and voice. Although this class is designed with a flexible schedule in mind, students are expected to commit to the same standards as expected of graduate-level creative writing courses, including: deadlines, feedback, and accountability.

Classes begin next week, with sessions offered on different days depending on the course selected.

How to Write about Walking: A Workshop on a Walk Around Miami

From the site: “Miami is a city of cars and roads but it’s also a marvelous place to walk. Miami is a city of beaches and bars but it’s also a city of readers — and a few who want to learn better how to write. Join a Walking Workshop with Miami native, essayist, author, teacher, and walker Nathan Deuel. We’ll meet on Miami Beach, and we’ll take a 3-hour walk around the city. We’ll discuss writing, and, most importantly — with our eyes on the road and taking in everything we see — we’ll discuss the tricks and charms and habits of making a piece of writing from a long day spent on two feet.”

This two-hour writing workshop is organized around the communicative act of texting. We will use this collaborative, compact and spontaneous form of communication to create “text poetry” of our own. Participant pairs will text lines back and forth, creating a collaborative poem of questions and responses and using selections of contemporary poems from Jim Moore, Louise Gluck and Pablo Neruda to focus on the use of questioning as a device in poetry. Maximum 20 participants. Sign up required.
